This was my first illustration I did as a gift. The technique was learned from a world-renowned colored pencil illustrator named Bill Nelson. Having studied his method, breaking it down step-by-step, I tried it out on a number of personal projects before deeming it good enough for commission work. The reference photo was taken during my son's 2nd birthday and it's still one of my favorites.
